The Big Four

Dustin Johnson is the bookmakers’ favourite as his last nine appearances have yielded seven top-ten finishes, including six top-fours, and he finally secured the elusive title when he won the tournament twelve months ago.

We successfully backed Johnson at 9/1 last year but he is 5/1 this week and he is undoubtedly the man to beat.

Rory McIlroy is next best at 14/1 and he tied 20th in his only appearance at Riviera in 2016, although he arrives off the back of a surprising missed cut last week.

Jordan Spieth (14/1) also disappointed last time out as his title defence at Pebble Beach ended with a top-20 and he has finished no better than 22nd in his past two visits to Riviera. Meanwhile, Justin Thomas has gone 41-54-39 in his three appearances in this and makes little appeal at 18/1.

Lefty Is Right

The 7,322 yard course at Riviera has continuously hosted this tournament since 1999 and it is a venue that Phil Mickelson absolutely loves. ‘Lefty’ finished runner-up in 2007 and 2009, either side of his back-to-back wins in 2008 and 2009.

It bodes well that 19 of his 42 career wins have come on the West Coast and he arrives in sensational form as he picked up back-to-back top-five finishes for the first time since 2013. A tie for 5th in Phoenix (where he ranked 2nd for scrambling) and a tie for 2nd at Pebble Beach (where he ranked 1st for scrambling) were hugely positive and he is striking the ball beautifully right now.

We backed ‘Lefty’ each way last week and we are going to stick with him in California.
Tip #1: Phil Mickelson (each way) @ 25/1 with Coral – 1/4 odds on 5 places.

The Long Shot

Scrambling has been a key indicator of performance at Riviera in the past as the last eight winners have ranked inside the top-20 for that statistic, while six of the past eight champions ranked in the top-25 for greens in regulation percentage.

Those stats bring us to our long-shot, Kevin Streelman, who sits 2nd for scrambling and 3rd for GIR on the PGA Tour this season. Streelman has been admirably consistent of late and he arrives with confidence-boosting tie for 6th at Pebble Beach under his belt.
Tip #2: Kevin Streelman (each way) @ 90/1 with Unibet – 1/5 odds on 6 places.

Make A Casey For Paul

Paul Casey’s hunt for a first win on the PGA Tour since 2009 has been well documented but his consistency has been remarkable of late. The Englishman hasn’t missed a cut in more than a year and his top-ten at Pebble Beach was his 16th top-20 finish in his past 19 starts.

Casey keeps knocking at the door and he can be in contention again at Riviera, where he lost out in a play-off in 2015.
Tip #3: Paul Casey (each way) @ 30/1 with Unibet.

Finally, Thomas Pieters has shown a real appetite for performing on American soil during the past 12 months as he followed up his tie for 2nd at Riviera with a top-four effort at the US Masters. A three-time winner on the European Tour, the Belgian has started this season in decent touch, finishing 5th in Abu Dhabi before signing off from the Dubai Desert Classic with an impressive round of 67.
Tip #4: Thomas Pieters (each way) @ 50/1 with Betfred.
