Ryder Sets The Standard

A comfortable three-length winner at Chepstow two starts ago, Western Ryder’s progression over timber continued at Cheltenham in December, as he got the better of Lalor by two lengths at National Hunt HQ, and now stepping up in Grade the six-year-old is a 15/8 with William Hill bookmakers to land victory in this contest.

He shaped like there’s a lot more to come as the seaon progresses, and is entitled to be the market leader here, but he will face some classy opponents in this intriguing renewal, and while he will relish the testing conditions, he may just find a rival too good here, and is certainly worth taking on at the short odds available.

Main Dangers

Amy Murphy’s Kalashnikov is challenging the abovementioned Western Ryder for favouritism, and that progressive performer has won all three of his career victories to date, and is a 9/4 shot with Betfair Sportsbook to make it four wins from four on Saturday, but this is a lot tougher than anything he has faced before, and could be another to avoid.

Paul Nicholls last won this race in 2008 with Breedsbreeze, but the Ditcheat handler will unleash Mont Des Avaloirs in this year’s Tolworth Hurdle, and having fallen at Wincanton two starts ago, he bounced back to winning ways last time out, and at 13/2 with William Hill is certainly the one to be with against the fancied two in the betting.

He looked to have the beating of Kilbricken Storm when coming down late on at Wincanton a few months agp, and with that one running at a high level at Newbury last time out in the Challow Hurdle at Newbury, then Nicholls’ charge could well be a cut above his rivals on Saturday, and is worth backing.

Best Of The Rest

Gary Moore’s Sussex Ranger has blossomed since moving to the jumping game from the Flat sphere in recent months, and with the four-year-old allowance here deserves a mention, but at 8/1 with Ladbrokes he is worth taking on, while The Russian Doyen (14/1) and Summerville Boy (16/1) complete the field, and both need to produce a huge career best to land this prize, which can head the way of the Nicholls yard.
