Saturday 15th October, 2016 – 1:25pm Ascot – Long Distance Cup

A sensational day of Flat racing will take place at Ascot on Saturday afternoon and British Champions Day kicks off with a fascinating renewal of the Long Distance Cup, which sees Aidan O’Brien’s Gold Cup hero Order Of St George return to the scene of his biggest career win and the Ballydoyle four-year-old will be a red-hot favourite for this Group 2 marathon, which sees a stellar field head to the 2m start.

  • Order Of St George won the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in June
  • Forgotten Rules won this race in 2014
  • Sheikhzayedroad beat Quest For More in Doncaster Cup in September

O’Brien Aims To Continue Dominance With George Success

Having romped to victory in the aforementioned Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in June, Order Of St George then went on to bag victory at the Curragh, but the Galileo colt then blotted his copybook with a below-par run when finishing second at 1/7 in the Irish Field St Leger, however, he bounced back to form with aplomb last time out when finishing a terrific third in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, which rounded off a spectactular 1-2-3 for the O’Brien team.

Now, the multiple Group winner will aim to build on that Chantilly place and if he can reproduce that run stepped back up in distance then it’s hard to see him not landing this prize, and Sky Bet certainly agree with that statement as they have installed him as the red-hot 10/11 favourite to bag more Pattern success.

Proven on the track if an on-song Order Of St George turns up to the Berkshire venue then he has already shown that he is one of the leading stayers in training, but a niggling doubt still lies in the back of the mind following his Irish St Leger flop, so it could be worth from a punting perspective looking for a more interesting betting option in what is a race full of quality.

Simple Verse Aims To Hit Right Tune On Champions Day Again

Ralph Becket’s Simple Verse was victorious in the Fillies’ & Mares’ Stakes at last year’s British Champions Day, but the former St Leger heroine will step up in distance for this test and was last seen bagging victory in the Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster, so if she can continue in that vain then has to be a leading player at 5/1 with bet365 bookmakers.

She has shown that she can excel in softish conditions, and with the ground easing at Ascot then she should be able to produce her best, but this will be the first time she has ever tackled two miles, so while she has shaped as if the step up in trip should be no problem, she may just find a couple too good here, as she could be outbattled in the closing stages of the race.

Dermot Weld’s Forgotten Rules is one raider that will now have no problems with the trip and he will be aiming to regain the Long Distance Cup crown he won in 2014, but the Rosewell House inmate has only been seen once this term, when second in Listed company, so this may come a little too soon for him, and for that reason the 8/1 with Coral can be dismissed.

Sheikhzayedroad The Each Way Selection

Sheikhzayedroad and Quest For More clashed in the Doncaster Cup last month, with the former just prevailing, and having finished an excellent third to Order Of St George in the Gold Cup it’s the former that could prove to be the each-way play here, and at 16/1 with Paddy Power could run a huge race.

David Simcock’s seven-year-old has been thriving this term, and could be potentially at his best in this test, so whilst Quest For More (10/1) was a fine winner of the Prix du Cadran last time out, it’s Sheikhzayedroad that makes more appeal from a betting angle, and he could well make the frame, if not challenge for victory.

Of the others, Litigant has not been seen since winning the November Handicap nearly a year ago, so you have to trust he will improve for his comeback run, so is easy to dismiss at 16/1 with Betway, while the likes of Nearly Caught (25/1) and Suegioo (66/1) may struggle at such a level, and will have to face a minor place in what is a terrific curtain-raiser.
