Wednesday 28th December 2016, 3pm – Lexus Chase (Leopardstown)

The Leopardstown Christmas Festival is a fantastic few days of action over in Ireland and the Lexus Chase on Wednesday looks like being one of the best races of the week. The Lexus is a Grade 1 contest run over a trip of 3m and as well as big a massive price in its own right, he also serves as a key trial on the road to the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

  • Willie Mullins won the Lexus for the first time in his training career last year with Don Poli
  • Only two horses older than eight have won the Lexus Chase since Dorans Pride won back in 1998 – Beef Or Salmon and Tidal Bay

Valseur Lido and Djakadam The Big Two

Valseur Lido produced a career best last time out when winning the JNwine Champion Chase in some style and many believe he is now a genuine player for the Gold Cup in March.

The Henry De Bromhead trained chaser travelled with style before easing clear of Silviniaco Conti at Down Royal last month and although this will be another step up for him in class, he remains relatively lightly and should improve again.

This will likely prove to be a stern test of Valseur Lido’s stamina and class but at the moment the bookmakers are keeping him on side at a price of 15/8 with Paddy Power.

Djakadam has finished 2nd in two Gold Cups and made a pleasing seasonal debut last time out when winning the John Durkan Chase down in trip earlier this month. Still only a 7YO, the Willie Mullins in-mate has proven himself amongst the best chasers in training over the past couple of years and a return trip to the Cheltenham Gold Cup is clearly on his agenda.

Best of the Rest…

Away from the market leaders, there are a number of nice horses taking their chance at Leopardstown with Zabana one that falls into this category.

The Andrew Lynch trained 7YO was a Grade 1 winning Novice at Punchestown last season, bating Outlander that day, and although he disappointed first time out this term, he bounced back at Gowran last time out to beat Kitten Rock down at 2m4f. He is of course steeping up in class but the extra trip will suit and Zabana is expected to run well at 8/1 with Paddy Power.

Of the rest, we really should mention Don Poli (12/1) who won this race last year for Willie Mullins. The two-time Cheltenham Festival winner has since moved to Gordon Elliott but it is fair to say his seasonal debut was disappointing. He was off the bridle virtually the whole way in the JNWine Champion Chase before tailing off and despite the fact he is sure to be better this time, he is probably best watched this time.

Conclusion

Valseur Lido was highly impressive at Down Royal last time out and might just be the progressive runner in this field but should Djakadam run, the Henry De Bromhead horse will need a clear career best. Similar comments apply to the lightly raced Zabana who will enjoy the step up in trip and although he will need more, his each way price does make plenty of appeal.
