2017 Natwest T20 Blast Betting Preview

The Natwest T20 Blast struggles to catch the attention in the way that the hyperbolic IPL or Big Bash can but the 2017 edition of England’s Twenty20 tournament does at least promise to be competitive, with the action set to get underway with a televised clash between Essex and Surrey on Sky Sports on Friday night…

The eighteen counties have been divided into a North and South Group this season, with nine in each. A county plays six of the teams from their group both at home and away, plus two counties only once… Got it?

From there, the top-four teams in each division go through to the quarter-finals for the knockout format.

The Outright Winner

It is Nottinghamshire who are 8/1 favourites to win the T20 Blast (Paddy Power) off the back of their Alex Hales-propelled Royal London One Day Cup success at Lord’s last Saturday.

The Outlaws stunned Surrey in the final and it is Surrey who are also towards the head of the market at 8/1. In truth, the London outfit make little appeal after they lost a third successive Royal London final at Lord’s and it is telling that they haven’t won a single piece of limited overs silverware since they were crowned T20 champions in 2003.

Yorkshire are next best at 10/1 but they have only made it out of the group stage twice in the past nine years and a disappointing 2017 campaign thus far suggests they will do well to emulate last year’s semi-final effort.

Meanwhile, Essex (14/1) are flying high at the top of the County Championship at the moment and they did reach the semi’s of the Royal London One Day Cup. They have made at least the quarter-finals of the T20 competition during each of the previous five years but they have only made the last-four on one occasion during that run.

Northamptonshire are underrated at 16/1 having reached three finals in four years, winning the 2013 and 2016 titles in the process, and they could be a danger.

However, our best bet this year is an improving Hampshire, who have made some canny signings for this season. The South Coast outfit have brought several quality Kolpak players on board and last season’s group stage exit was something of an outlier as they had made at least the semi-finals during the six previous T20 competitions, winning the title in 2010 and 2012.

Hampshire have pedigree and a quality squad, so the 12/1 with Ladbrokes is well worth a look.

Top Batsman

We can only start with one man when it comes to the top batsman betting market – Gloucestershire’s Michael Klinger. The Australian is a genius in this format as he has finished in the top-five of the leading runscorer standings in three of the past four editions of the English T20, racking up eye-watering tallies of 366 (5th highest), 298, 654 (2nd) and 548 (1st) respectively.

The 37-year-old was top runscorer last year and he is 12/1 to do so again (Unibet).

Colin Ingram finished just behind Klinger with an impressive total of 502 runs in 2016 and Glamorgan’s South African opener has been in superb form in limited overs cricket this season, scoring 564 runs in the Royal London Cup. The 32-year-old is a tempting 20/1 to top the charts this year.
