National Hunt fans will see the return of some big names over the weekend, as the Jumps season clicks up a few gears, and there’s no doubting that the highlight is the Grade 1 Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal where Irish star Delta Work locks horns with British hope Clan Des Obeaux in a humdinger.

On English shores, Wetherby will host of top notch card and while the bet365 Hurdle will attract some top notch stayers it’s the Grade 2 Charlie Hall Chase, which is the feature event, as potential Cheltenham Gold Cup hopes make some early season claims.

We preview both races here:

2:25pm Down Royal – Ladbrokes Champion Chase (Grade 1)

Third in the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last season, Delta Work ended the campaign with a fine win at the Punchestown Festival, and the Gordon Elliott-trained raider will look to kick off his season with a win at Down Royal.

Installed as the 15/8 favourite with BetVictor, Delta Work will face a notable rival in the shape of last year’s King George VI Chase hero Clan Des Obeaux, who is looking to hand Paul Nicholls his first win in the race since 2012, and the Ditcheat inmate is the 9/4 second favourite with BetVictor,

Fifth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Clan Des Obeaux will not only have to deal with Delta Work, but last year’s winner of this race Road To Respect will look to retain his crown, and he is next in the betting at 7/2 with Paddy Power, and the Noel Meade-trained raider adds more depth to a fascinating renewal.

Snow Falcon (15/2 with BetVictor) is fresh from a victory and with fitness on his side will be looking to land a minor shock, while Alpha Des Obeaux (18/1 with BetVictor) completes the line-up.

3;40pm Wetherby – Charlie Hall Chase (Grade 2)

Three Graded wins over fences last season, La Bague Au Roi was one of the most consistent performers over the larger obstacles and the Warren Greatrex-trained mare will look to kick off her season with a win in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby.

Available at 5/2 with BetVictor, the eight-year-old has winning form at the track having won a Listed event two years ago, and if she can build on last season’s fine campaign then she is the one to beat.

However, Definitly Red is bidding for back-to-back wins in the race and Brian Ellison’s charge is 9/2 with William Hill to down Greatrex’s mare, while Welsh National hero Elegant Escape will look to emulate that Chepstow win and is 5/1 with William Hill.

Ballyoptic and Aso (both 6/1 with BetVictor) are both classy performers on their day, but will need career bests to figure here, while Top Ville Ben adds more depth to the contest and at 8/1 with BetVictor could be the value play to the fancied contenders in what should be a superb showpiece.
