Van Gerwen Favourite

Michael van Gerwen is the two-time defending champion and he is a skinny 4/5 favourite (Bet Victor) for a tournament that starts with a group stage format. The players are divided into eight groups of four, with the top-two from each group going through to the knockout stages…

Van Gerwen will have to do things the hard way and he had shown that there are a few chinks in the armour as he made early exits from a couple of events before winning the World Series of Darts last time out.

Make no mistake, the Dutchman should win in Wolverhampton but his price is very short considering he is in the same half of the draw as the likes of 2012 winner Raymond van Barneveld (50/1), who has made the last-eight in each of the last two renewals, and six-time champion Phil Taylor (9/1).

James Wade is actually in the same Group C as Taylor and he could offer each-way value at a massive 100/1 with Ladbrokes. The Englishman has twice finished runner-up at the Grand Slam of Darts, including last year, and he has been finding form following a tough year, reaching the semi-finals of both the German Masters and World Series recently.

Anderson Offers Value

For us, Gary Anderson is the pick of the prices at 6/1 (BetVictor.com) as he bids to win this tournament for the first time after reaching the final in 2011 and the semi-finals in 2016. The Scot has consistently been challenging for titles, finishing runner-up at the Champions League and World Series recently, so perhaps he is worth an each-way punt.

Anderson gets the nod over Peter Wright (9/1) in this half of the draw as he has only lost one of the past ten meetings with his fellow Scot (won eight, drawn one).
