Tranmere V Tottenham Tips And Betting Preview

The FA Cup takes centre stage this weekend and the first televised game comes from Prenton Park on Friday night as League Two’s Tranmere take on Premier League high-fliers Tottenham.

Unsurprisingly, Spurs go into the match as 2/9 favourites but they have had their troubles against lower league teams in this competition in recent times and there could be some value in backing the hosts to cover a +2 goal advantage in the handicap market…

Tranmere v Tottenham Top Tips

Tottenham have only lost one of their past 18 FA Cup ties against lower league opposition, although it is worth noting that they were taken to replays by Newport and Rochdale last season. It is likely that Mauricio Pochettino will rotate his team on Friday as they have a huge EFL Cup clash with Chelsea coming up on Tuesday, so this seems like an ideal chance to rest players.

They will do well not to underestimate Tranmere, who are 13/10 to cover +2 goals on the handicap (Betfair), and Micky Mellon’s men are currently sitting in ninth place in the League Two table.

Tranmere have beaten Southport and Oxford to reach this stage of the competition, albeit they haven’t gone beyond the third round since 2002. The hosts can make life difficult but Spurs should be too strong in the end.

Tottenham have been semi-finalists during each of the previous two editions of the FA Cup and they haven’t lost in eight meetings with Tranmere (won six, drawn two) ahead of their first head-to-head meeting since 2002.

With Pochettino set to rotate his team, it is well worth a look at Erik Lamela as an anytime goalscorer (11/5 with Unibet). Lamela, who has notched five goals this season, tends to enjoy cup competitions as he has scored four in his last ten outings in the FA Cup and League Cup.

Paddy Power go 7/5 for Lamela to score in a Tottenham win.
